South Africa School Holidays December 2025: Updated Calendar And New Dates Released

South Africa School Holidays 2025 : Parents all over South Africa can finally have a better view of their festive season planning as the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has released the updated school holiday calendar for December 2025 officially. The new calendar has a few major changes, and the families are advised to pay attention to it so that the learners will be back at school in time for the new year.

Longer Holidays In December For Students

The DBE has announced that the schools will be closed sooner than initially planned, so the students will have a longer break for the December holidays. This news is good for the families who are traveling, taking part in festive activities, or simply hoping to rest after the stressful academic year.

The department, on the other hand, is adamant that the holiday extension will not be a factor in shortening the academic year which will, in turn, affect the start of the 2026 academic calendar.

When Schools Reopen In 2026

To clarify the new schedule, the students will return to school in the mid-January 2026 according to the usual reopening procedure. The teaching staff, however, will be involved in the pre-academic activities sooner than the rest which consists of planning, administration, and preparing the curriculum.

Parents must watch carefully the communication channels of their children’s schools, since announcements like the dates for new students’ orientation, textbook collection, and uniform purchasing will be made during the months of December and January.

Reasons Behind The Calendar Change

The department justified that the long holiday period during the year is meant to allow room for the national assessments, final exams, and the issuing of report cards to be done without applying any pressure on the students and teachers.

Besides, the officials also pointed out that the minor change in the calendar prevents the provinces from drifting apart and drawing their own lines, though there will be differences in school operations, travel routines, and year-end events from region to region.

What Parents Should Do Right Now

In order not to create stress during the last few days, schools suggest that families take the following steps with the help of this early notice:

  • Book holiday care or travel well in advance
  • Stock up on supplies for the new school year
  • Keep an eye on school communication for updates specific to the province
  • Prepare for orientation weeks, particularly for Grade R and Grade 8 learners

Keeping updated during the holidays will contribute to a problem-free and relaxing beginning to 2026.
