South Africa School Holidays December 2025: Updated Academic Calendar Now Released

South Africa School Holidays 2025 : South African families are now in a position to officially map out their holidays as the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has published the December 2025 school calendar for the whole year. The new calendar has been altered and it now includes some important changes which apply to all provinces; thus, parents need to be attentive in order to avoid any confusion about the closing of schools for the year.

The academic year will end earlier than originally planned, and so the revised calendar is a way of relieving the learners and teachers from the pressure, at the same time, giving them enough time to rest before the opening of the 2026 school year.

Revised School Closing Dates For December 2025

The new academic calendar indicates that most south african public schools will be closed for the year by the end of the second week of December 2025. All the assessments, year-end tests, and administrative tasks are guaranteed to be carried out before the holidays.

Students in different provinces will have a very similar vacation but a few days differences. The new calendar is also a relief for the schools that were disrupted earlier, as it lets them complete the syllabus without going into late December for the school year.

Why The Calendar Was Revised

The DBE has revealed the following main causes that led to the new schedule:

  • Changes in curriculum recovery to be implemented at the beginning of 2025.
  • The demand for sufficient time to mark and moderate final exams.
  • A long rest period for learners after a hard academic year.
  • The schools getting ready for the 2026 academic year smoothly.

Officials pointed out that the adjusted calendar still contains all the necessary teaching days and at the same time gives priority to the well-being of learners.

Impact On Learners And Parents

The new holiday starting date has several advantages for the families:

  • Parents are able to arrange travel, childcare, and holiday activities in advance.
  • Matric markers and teachers get more days for preparation.
  • Students enjoy a longer, less stressful holiday period.

Parents are advised, however, to check with their provinces as some schools, particularly those in coastal areas, may have slight variations in their closing dates.

When Schools Reopen In 2026

The December festivities will stretch a bit more than the normal period, but the expected start of the 2026 academic year is still the same. In the middle of January 2026, students will come back to school, and also teachers will be reporting for their classes earlier in the new academic term for planning and administration.

It is up to the parents to keep themselves well-informed about the reopening details, textbook collection dates, and orientation for new learners through the school’s official communication channels.
